Why Knowing Your Love Languages Can Transform Your Work Relationships

Why Knowing Your Love Languages Can Transform Your Work Relationships The first time a friend asked me what my love language welches, I thought they were prying into my sex life.Excuse me? I balked, determined to keep my private life, well, private. Thankfully, she quickly explained She didnt care about my sex life (okay, ouch) but wanted to know which of the five Love Languages, as popularized in the 1992 bestseller The Five Love Languages How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mateby Gary Chapman, I identified with.Um, okay. I recalled seeing this book at countless used bookstores, but had never taken it seriously. Wasnt it just another wonky early-90s joke of a self-help book? But then I started asking my other friends and family members about it, and it became clear that everyone else knew their love language. I welches the one who was missing out Missing a key piece of my inner puzzle Probably ruining all of my relationships This wasnt good.Suddenly, I found myself Googling in the middle of the night, asking my smartest friend, the internet, which love language fit my rolleality, identity and relationships. It was stressful, like finding out that no matter how hard I wished to be a Gryffindor, I would most accurately be sorted into Hufflepuff. Ok, it wasnt quite that sad, because none of the five Love Languages are better or cooler than the others. I quickly learned that they are all just, well personal.Once I learned my love language, I couldnt stop thinking about it. Yes, in addition to being a Capricorn, an Enneagram Type 1, an extroverted introvert and a middle child, I was also a person who could identify words of affirmation as her official love language. If I were less scared or more rock n roll, I might even get it tattooed on my body. My love language was another thing I could use to better my interpersonal relationships, to help create boundaries and to explain my weirdo personality.Obviously, I didnt keep my newfound love language knowledg e to myself. In fact, I told everyone. Often. I wanted everyone to know my language, and I wanted to know theirs. I told myself that I was watching an extra episode of Schitts Creek because my partners language was quality time, and I decided that half of my teenage angst was related to not hearing words of affirmation about my outfit choices. (Those capris are fine is just not the same as You look so cute in those capris and polo shirt, right? Right.)Knowing about the love languages helped my personal relationships, just like you would expect. I started to communicate better with my girlfriend. I understood where my mom was coming from. I was even able to strengthen friendships. But the distributionspolitik where the love languages helped the most, in a surprising twist, was my job. My day-to-day, 9-to-5 workdistribution policy.Where else are we tasked with fostering dozens of relationships with people we barely know? Where else do we have to solve problems, finish projects and rel y on others for our paycheck? We spend most of our days at work. Sometimes, we feel like weare our work. Thats a problem for another article, but for now, suffice it to say that knowing your love language can, in fact, improve your work relationships. Lets review the five (because you were secretly hoping we would) and think about what they might look like in the workplace.Quality timeThis one actually goes by a number of other names, including long meetings, surprise meetings, never-ending email chain, and phone call that didnt need to happen. Sometimes, colleagues seem to snatch away all our work time with face-time and communication that might not seem necessary. However, when viewed as a love language, it becomes easier to give a little grace to those who value our time.A coworker (or employee or employer) might need, more than anything else, a few extra minutes of meeting time, or a quick check-in phone call. Of course, theres a difference between quality time and a time-suck, the difference being quality. Always keep that top-of-mind when indulging your coworkers need to re-discuss something or review information for the umpteenth time.Words of affirmationWhen I first realized this was my love language, my world didnt change. It was when I shared it with people that I started seeing major results. Now, I say it in the interview. Yep, Im a hard worker, a multitasker and a words-of-affirmation-needer.In the workplace, words of affirmation look like verbal and written feedback. I need to be reminded when Im doing a good joband notified when Im not. For people who value words of affirmation, its all about the words. From the quick, complimentary email to the detailed performance evaluation, it settles the heart to see words of affirmation from an employer or colleague.Acts of serviceDo you have a coworker who consistently asks for help on projects, even though you know she doesnt need assistance? Or perhaps you know someone who is always the first to volunt eer for an outside-of-work-hours event and the one who brings in a cake on birthdays. Wow, you think. Hes such a giver. The givers often live up to their titles, but they also appreciate when they see others doing acts of service. For the giver, you might offer to take that weekend shift every once in a while. Bring them a coffee in the morning or give them a hand on a project. Dont worry, theyll always return the favor. Its their love languageReceiving giftsWe all know that one person who is a natural gift-giver. They plan the work baby showers, leave presents for new hires, and organize the gifts on Administrative Professionals Day. What we dont often realize is that gift-givers are deeply appreciative of gifts given to them. The smallest gestures are sometimes the most meaningful. If you know someone at work who likes giving and receiving gifts, you could avoid them (I have), but you could also try to embrace their love language. Thank them for always remembering birthdays. Give them an email shout-out for the holiday cookies they left in the break room. And when you have an extra coffee, notebook, or Target gift card give it to them Theyll appreciate it more than anyone else.Physical touchGenerally, the workplace is not the place for physical touch. But there are always those coworkers who are huggers, hand-on-the-shoulder-ers, and high-fivers. Thats fine, but it can still make you uncomfortable. Luckily, part of knowing the love languages is giving yourself permission to create boundaries. So, Karens love language is touch great You can let her know that yours is quality time and that you are not a toucher. That way, she wont be surprised when you dont go in for the hug or high-five, and you wont be endlessly annoyed at her physicality. That said, there is a major difference between the physical touch love language (high-fives, handshakes) and someone who needs to be reported to HR.Today, the love language concept has grown into a small empire. Theres a website, podcasts, apps and over 40 related books. If youre willing to pay, you can even board an Alaskan cruise with Gary Chapman, the author of the original book. Its all a lot. I prefer to be a casual consumer of the Love Language philosophy, but I have found that incorporating it into my work life has improved many of my work relationships. I am able to see why people have certain behaviors, and I am better equipped to discuss my own needs, wants and expectations. If you havent yet discovered your own love language get to the internet, and take an online quiz. You know youre curious.

6 Secrets for Avoiding Interruptions at Work

6 Secrets for Avoiding Interruptions at Work6 Secrets for Avoiding Interruptions at WorkYoure working on a major project, and youve blocked out a few hours to really knock it out. But just as youre getting into the zone, your boss stops by to drop off some paperwork. Then your co-worker comes over to chat about next weeks meeting. Your phone rings. Your email dings. You face one disruption after aelendher. And when you finally get back to your project, all of your brilliant new thoughts (not to mention motivation) are long gone.Unfortunately, managing these interruptions isnt as easy as closing your office door (just ask the colleague thinking should I or shouldnt I knock?) or telling your co-workers to go away. (I gained a bit of a reputation at a prior job for a death stare I gave when I was too busy to chat- lets just say, not the best approach.)But, as I learned, there are some simple, effective ways to refocus after interruptions or, even better, prevent them in the first place. Use the following ideas to stop unanticipated breaks from throwing you off your game.Avoiding InterruptionsThe best way to minimize interruptions is to take some proactive steps to avoid them. Before you get started on a major project, try these approaches to make sure you actually get the productive time you were planning for.1. Communicate With Your ColleaguesLets revisit the closed door scenario How will your colleagues know when youre eating lunch at your desk versus finishing a grant application before a major deadline? Answer tell them. In a small office, feel free to send around an email that says, Im on deadline for the annual report today- please only reach out with items that cant wait until tomorrow. In a larger office, clue in a few key people, including your boss, your assistant, and your immediate officemates. Theyll be less likely to disturb you and can also help pass on the message to those headed your way.2.Use Your TechnologyThe Do Not Disturb button on your phone isnt just there for decoration, much like your Out of Office message isnt there only for time off. So, take advantage of this customizable technology and platzset up messages to let your colleagues know that youll be unavailable. Change your Out of Office response to say that youll respond to emails tomorrow. Block out time on your Outlook calendar as Unavailable- Name of Project so well-meaning colleagues wont choose that time to stop by for a chat. And dont be afraid to DND your phone. Non-urgent messages can sit in voicemail for a few hours, and if someone needs you, theyll come find you. (Note This approach does not work when you do it every Tuesday. Use it for big, time-sensitive projects only.)3.Have a Go-To PhraseIs it possible to prevent an interruption when someone is literally walking up to your desk? You dont want to ignore her or cut her off to explain how busy you are, so the key here is to pre-empt her Have a phrase that you always use to start (and end) a conversatio n when youre too busy to talk. When you see someone coming toward you, say, Im in the middle of something right now- can I check back with you tomorrow? or Im swamped right now, can you send me a meeting request? This way, she knows following up is on your to-do list, but that nows not a good time. Refocusing After an InterruptionOf course, while you can minimize interruptions, you cant always avoid them altogether, particularly when a time-sensitive issue arises. When the inevitable occurs, heres how to quickly get back on track.1.If Youre BrainstormingLets say youre thinking through an upcoming campaign or a way to approach a potential partner organization when an urgent email arrives. Now what? Though your first instinct might be to drop everything and respond, try to pause for 20 seconds and jot down a handful of key words so you wont lose your ideas altogether. If its helpful, include arrows of how they connect or any other symbols to jog your memory. It doesnt have to look pre tty or make sense to anyone else- all that matters is that you can piece together your thoughts when you sit back down to work.2.If Youre WritingOne of the most frustrating things about being disturbed when youre writing is feeling like you had a rhythm and now youve lost it. Instead of expecting yourself to pick up where you left off, set aside a few minutes to go back and re-read the last few paragraphs youve written. Use this time to make mental notes of what you were thinking or where you were going next and let them guide you back on track.3.If You Cant RefocusSometimes refocusing just isnt possible. Maybe youre on edge about being disturbed (a fire alarm, today- really?) or just feel like you lost your mojo. In this case, dont force it. Allow yourself a little time to decompress and stand up, walk around, or go get a cup of coffee. Its space for you to ease back into thinking about the project again (or let yourself be totally distracted if need be), so youll be able start fre sh when you get back to your desk.Unfortunately, interruptions happen, so its how you deal with them that matters. Be proactive and have some smart strategies to get back on track, and youll be more productive (not to mention less intimidating to your colleagues).

How to assert yourself when youre dismissed

How to assert yourself when youre dismissedHow to assert yourself when youre dismissedHave you ever sat in a meeting and felt ignored or utterly unimportant? Perhaps you offered up an idea thatsomeone else seized upon. Maybe you inserted yourself into the conversation but no one gave you their eye contact or their attention. Whether youre the youngest in the room or the one from a department no one respects (or youre just not getting your due for unknown reasons), you can lean on these four strategies to re-assert yourself.Get back in thereIf youre getting jangled by rude or demeaning dynamics, resist the urge to disengage from the conversation and be silenced. Frame a relevant idea in your mind and then build off someone elses idea starting with, Yes, and Barbara Pachtera business etiquette expert and author, even advocates for strategically interrupting when youre being talked over. Said Pachter, In some situations, if you dont interrupt, you wont get to speak. The easiest way to interrupt is when the other rolle takes a breath. You then speak up quickly, acknowledge what the person said, and add your thoughts.Lean on powerful evidenceIt was author and journalistChristopher Hitchenswho once said, That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence. Since knowledge is power, ask yourself how prepared you are for your typical meeting and how you introduce your ideas. If your idea isnt getting the attention it deserves, tell your colleagues what competitive analysis, industry news or relevant and meaningful statistics youre relying on. Then frame your ideas leading with your evidence, The industry forces show , The statistics reveal , Our company has historically Call out the dismissive behaviorAmi B. Kaplan recommends saying, That sounds dismissive or Youre being dismissive , or Its not OK to just dismiss my point of view. Building on Kaplans counsel, I have also seen people quiet the room and take back the platform with a firm I wasnt finished. The best thing about this technique is that raises awareness about a persons behavior and gives them a chance to correct it. Believe it or not, not all dismissive behavior is pointed or intentional.Respect your rsumWhen I interviewed the formidable Barbara Krumsiek, CEO ofCalvert Investmentsfor my bookPUSHBACK, she urged women to lean more often on their knowledge and experience. Said Krumsiek, I think its important for women to respect their resumes. I will try to weave into a conversation that I have math degrees or that I served on a national development team, for example. Relate an anecdote that demonstrates your competence. Next time youre dismissed or challenged, try asserting what experience or training backs up your point. Despite how commonplace narcissism seemsto be amongst younger generations, the study concurrently observed a collectivedisdain and embarrassment expressed by the very same study group. The authors report, Results from cross-sectional samples of university students at two universities, as well as an online convenience sample of web-using adults, indicated that emerging adults believe their age-group and the one following them to be the most narcissistic and entitled age-groups, that they have generally negative opinions of narcissism and entitlement, and that they respond negatively to being labeled as narcissistic and entitled. The authors correctly point out how frequently this undesirable quality is associated with young Americans, despite the comparatively little empirical research that has been conducted on it. Older generations were found to agree with millennials and generationZ about their narcism, though the former typically exaggerated the degree.
